Here’s a quick update, things have been moving fast and furiously. New SHW systems are going in, bids for energy engineering projects and solar electric systems are out there waiting for stimulation.
Meanwhile the ‘proof-of-concept’ hybrid concentrating solar system is performing well, and about to be inhanced so that the next generation will be ready for ‘prime-time’ commercialization next spring.
Life in Boothbay Harbor has slowed down, but inside this super-insulated passive structure with active solar systems it still feels warm and sunny. For the cold overcast days, we have a woodstove that heats the radiant floor and provides a great warmth. On the cold, damp days, Trudy likes getting close enough to the stove to melt most synthetic materials, but whatever floats her boat. I’m looking forward to cranking the collectors up to 67 degrees and wading through some snow in December & January and having the days lengthen and the the collector tilt come back down toward 22-degrees.

I’ve just ordered 1.35 kW of PV for the house. This system will suply a .7 solar fraction (S.F.) for our typical electric consumption. We have paid a $0.02/kWh premium to purchase local (Maine) R.E. generated electricity, which has cost $0.195/kWh, rather than purchase any brown power. With this high electric costs and the added load from running business equipment, we are approaching ~230 kWh/month which cost us ~$45/month.
So based on the economics (a 5% home equity loan w/10 year term, the State solar incentive of $2,000 ($2/W up to 1KW), the 30% Fed Tax credit on the remainer, and Maine’s net billing policies), this project reaches (and exceeds) parity with grid supllied power, if we finance 100% of the project cost. That means that for the next 10 years, my loan payment for the PV system will be less than the avoided cost of electricity that the system produces. Thus in affect, I’ve locked in >70% of my electric expense at a lower rate for 10-years. After 10 years (for the next ~30) the only cost for the solar electricity produced will minor maintenance associated with replacing the inverter at the end each of it ~12 -15 year lives.
You could have had a PV. (You still can!)
If you have a business, the economics are even more appealing, because of the allowed excellerated depreciation treatment.

The price of electricity will only go up so solar panels will only become a better investment. Have found some useful tips about buying Solar Panels and I will use them when I purchase panels myself.

We like to think of ourselves as amazing, but wasting resourses costs $; while being more efficient, minimizing the risks associated with the variable costs of energy and reducing your environmental footprint is just good business. It just also happens to be very cool.

A: Yes most are. We’re hoping to get an affordable electric vehicle, that can be converted to solar electric. It may be a vehicle or 2 away from what we can feasibly reach due to financial realities, but we’re very interested in reducing our transportation’s environmental footprint. We keep our actual travel down doing less but will address this issue very soon. Thanks for the comment.

A: You would think that with a handle of windpower, you’d know about this. It’s quite basic and my current ideas have been pushed since the 60s by people as great as R. Buckminster Fuller and others. I hope that you catch-up soon.

I’m trying to read the intact clause but can only get halfway. At the middle point, everything seems to get cut off. You should have a look at your stylesheet and make sure everythings undamaged.

Hello friends,
I’ve just ordered 1.35 kW of PV for the house. This system will suply a .7 solar fraction (S.F.) for our typical electric consumption. We have paid a $0.02/kWh premium to purchase local (Maine) R.E. generated electricity, which has cost $0.195/kWh, rather than purchase any brown power. With this high electric costs and the added load from running business equipment, we are approaching ~230 kWh/month which cost us ~$45/month.
So based on the economics (a 5% home equity loan w/10 year term, the State solar incentive of $2,000 ($2/W up to 1KW), the 30% Fed Tax credit on the remainer, and Maine’s net billing policies), this project reaches (and exceeds) parity with grid supllied power, if we finance 100% of the project cost. That means that for the next 10 years, my loan payment for the PV system will be less than the avoided cost of electricity that the system produces. Thus in affect, I’ve locked in >70% of my electric expense at a lower rate for 10-years. After 10 years (for the next ~30) the only cost for the solar electricity produced will minor maintenance associated with replacing the inverter at the end each of it ~12 -15 year lives.
You could have had a PV. (You still can!)
If you have a business, the economics are even more appealing, because of the allowed excellerated depreciation treatment.

Solar panels, in my eyes, are one of the best investments a home owner could make due to them lasting for many years and producing energy for as long as they last. The price of electricity will only go up so solar panels will only become a better investment. Have found some useful tips about buying Solar Panels and I will use them when I purchase panels myself.

I believe when you need a dictionary to read the first paragraph of a blog post, you really wouldn’t want to continue, especially when you’re in a rush.
A: Ok maybe you have something there. My systems are significant, life-changing, fairly expensive, devices/services, that probably isn’t something that you’d decide on in a rush. But I’ll take another look at it and see if it’s tooo much. But in case someone ever esks you what heliotropic means, maybe you’ll remember. Thank-you for your input.

I used to own a tank water heater but have since changed to a tankless and I have saved heaps of money.
A: Heaps, then you really should put in a solar hot water system and save heaps more.

A: Yes most are. We’re hoping to get an affordable electric vehicle, that can be converted to solar electric. It may be a vehicle or 2 away from what we can feasibly reach due to financial realities, but we’re very interested in reducing our transportation’s environmental footprint. We keep our actual travel down doing less but will address this issue very soon. Thanks for the comment.

A: You would think that with a handle of windpower, you’d know about this. It’s quite basic and my current ideas have been pushed since the 60s by people as great as R. Buckminster Fuller and others. I hope that you catch-up soon.

Solar water heater is a very good technology because it helps conserve electrical energy for heating,-;
A: I would not recommend electrical energy for heating, unless it utilizes at least a factor 4 electrotechnology, like a heat pump. Electricity is a high form of energy, whereas heat is the lowest form, and can be recaptured from almost any other activity, like lighting or efficient motor usage.
