Project Summary
Concentrating solar electric collector system
Heliotropic Technologies, PA – Boothbay Harbor.
Heliotropic Technologies proposes to develop residential-sized concentrating solar electric collector systems using parabolic-shaped troughs with reflective surfaces to increase the direct solar light intensity reaching photovoltaic modules to increase their electric output. This grant would allow Heliotropic Technology to develop technology that has not been available for smaller applications.
Heliotropic Technologies is a renewable energy systems implementation and energy engineering company that is ready to meet the demands of today’s marketplace. Heliotropic Technologies was created to help the world become a better place by doing its part to reduce energy consumption and energy’s contribution to human-induced global climate change, while offering rewarding jobs to its employees. Energy independence, demand for low intrinsic energy products, global climate awareness and other green marketing incentives have increased the demand for services and products that Heliotropic Technologies is uniquely positioned to provide.

Hi, very nice post. I have been wonder’n bout this issue,so thanks for posting
January 1st, 2010 at 9:14 am
any updates???
Updates, yes Happy 2010! The days are getting longer, in another 10 days I’ll start lowering the collector positions and prepare to head back into better solar collection weather.
In 2009, we tested three reflector shapes in the hybrid solar systems and have a clear winning design from these ‘proof-of-concept’ devices. Our next step will be to create a larger grid-tied system, based on the better reflector design version, using more advanced materials and controls.
We hope to recieve another small matching grant to help us implement this next product development phase and to look into product patenting issues. With the research grant partially funding this next phase of product development, we will complete detail system designs, build, and test the enhanced system throughout the spring and summer, with a marketing goal of further ‘beta testing’ in the Fall and product commercialization by 2011.

Michael replies:
Thank-you and everyone else for the kind words. What a great way to end the winter. The days are longer and the weather here in mid-coast Maine may reach 70 today.
It’s been a strange winter, we were too far north to get much of the winter snow this year.
Climate change- how can it be ignored?

I would like to express my appreciation for your post. That’s really great to know that there are such people like you who do their job very well and with such enthusiasm.
A: Thank-you very much, … Can I sell you a solar system, or design you a solar castle, or do some strategic energy planning for your business?
I appreciate your kind words.
April 21st, 2010 at 12:54 am
Hey, found your site by accident doing a search on Google but I’ll definitely be coming back. As for your post… I will agree with a lot of what you’ve said but wouldn’t it be just as easy to let it go? I mean why mess with your quality of life if you don’t have to?
A: You seem to be missing the big picture as well as the one concerning quality of life. Climate change is for real. Ignoring the environment and doing things without considering the consequences is immature and irresponsible. But you can have it all if you look at the whole picture. My quality of life is exceptionally high and likely will be until I’m wheeled off to the little village before the viking funeral.
Living in a solar home is very healthy, and pleasant. Having a lifestyle with a solar fraction of >.7 is not painful, and gives you room for efficiency improvements and technology breakthroughs.
Being wasteful and letting go just isn’t cool; and it’s likely why many world citizens, who are effected by the raising sea leavels and rising temperatures and other climate change issues in critical areas, are so angry about the ‘American lifestyle’.
We will lose our position in the world economy if we don’t embrace energy efficiency and sustainable energy practices. If we do embrace it, it can drive our economy, like it’s driving the Germany economy, out of this recession. Letting go is not an option that I would consider reasonable, nor sane.
April 21st, 2010 at 1:26 am
I absolutely agree. That is exactly how I understand it. Excellent!
April 21st, 2010 at 2:28 am

As energy prices sky rocket the prices of solar panels will only go up. This will hopefully prove that solar panels will be a great investment for anyone wanting to save some money or help the environment. Either way, solar panels really should be at the top of the “to do” list.
A: The cost of solar electricity has reached parity with grid-supplied power, especially if you are presently purchacing renewably generated electricity at a premium. It just becomes a matter of your financing terms. If you can finace the system with 0 down, a 10 year term and low ~5% interest rate, with state and federal incentives, you may be able to own a solar electric system for the same cost that you presently pay for the grid-supplied power. It’s the own versus rent type of argument. for the cost of ‘renting electric generation’, you could could own your own solar power system.
April 26th, 2010 at 11:59 am
I have to say, I really enjoy your blog. Maybe you could tell me how I can keeping up to date with it? By the way I stumbled upon your website through Lycos.
A: The latest blog comments are listed last, and I’ll keep adding content as I have time, so check back every couple months. The next project posted will likely be a 1.35 kW PV project that will provide the facility with a >.7 solar fraction.
April 26th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
to make a solar/rain barrel irrigation/sprinkler sysyem for my my lawn. Any ideas where to look for plans on electrical design, implementation, etc.
April 27th, 2010 at 7:16 am
It sounds like a job for Heliotropic Technologies. If you’re not ready to make that much of a financial commitment, you’ll just have to figure it out yourself, but it could be faily simple, a moisture sensor for the lawn, float switch on the rain barrel, PV to power pump, and a battery to store electricity until you have water in your barrel and the lawn is dry, and some perferated irrigation hose/pipe/sprinkler.
Good-luck & have fun.
April 27th, 2010 at 10:58 pm
Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.

April 28th, 2010 at 3:52 am
Yes, that is true, I agree with you, but I am not sure if there are no other options.
A: I’m sure there’s lots of other options. This was just one that I thought had promise & pursued.

The place features sky lights and lots of light which may affect the bill. If you have experience with such bills, Can you please give me an estimate of how much it could cost me yearly? monthly average?
I’m a little confused as to what we’re specificly talking about. Yes, a place with skylights certainly can allow less electric lighting and therefore produce daylight harvesting savings. There are 4 skylights on the southern roofs in the living area of my house and in our office area; and we tend (prefer) to work in the naturally daylit areas, without supplimental lights on, whenever possible. It feels much healthier and my electric bills are very low.
Electric lighting systems have a long way to go before they become very efficient converting electricity into high color rendering visable lighting, and daylighting is free. You have very few maintenance issues with daylighting (no lamps to replace). Daylight harvesting, which may be as simple as light shelves placed near windows, can improve the lighting quality, and reduce the lighting associated portion of an electric bill considerably. We have great deal of experience with this subject and would be very pleased to consult with you on a related project.

I am looking for someone who could use appprox. 20-50 tons of waste Hardwood. This could possibly be an ongoing amount. Any suggestions on this?
May 12th, 2010 at 7:00 am
I would contact someone in the local area, who would probably be excited to hear about it. The transportation expense of shipping waste wood could considerable, so you’ll want to deal with someone very local.
good luck

assisted water heaters?. I used this type of system in a home I owned in the 80′s. I can fabricate the solar loop myself. I plan to use copper for the loop. Does anyone know if schedule 80 pvc is an efficient alternative to copper? I’ve been out of the “loop” for quite awhile. Thanks
A: Makes me wonder what was asked first? PVC isn’t recommended. The flash temp of a stagnet collector will produce 350+ temps in the loop (Don’t do it!).

I’ve recently been an avid admirer of your website for a while and never really provided nearly anything back, I hope to alter that later on with more debate. Thanks for another new inclusion to the site.
June 13th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
Aloha. As i am very curious about topic. So where can I get more information about that? Any advice?
A: I think that the DOE websites, and the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) site provide a good start and then web searches for particular technologies, with enough technical words to weed out the non-scientific chatter. A lot of local community colleges are starting to offer very good entry level classes and the local branches of the Amercan Solar Energy Socies (ASES) will also lokely provide courses. If your interested in Energy Efficiency, versus Renewable energy, there are both technical colleges and courses offered by AEE (Association of Energy Engineers) and ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air conditioning Engineers) which are listed on their websites. Good-luck.

I would like to add something for people who are into protecting our earth and environment. Now, with all the global issues that we have to embrace into our lives and our childrens lives, we should all do our part to help a least a little bit. Why not Eliminate your Electrical Bill and Save Thousands a year with Solar Panels for your Home, they are extremely easy to build and this will be an easy way for you to do your part in helping our planet and save a tonne of money at the same time. Think about it.
A: Nioce coment, but I would put it slightly differant, though I’m on the very same page. Solar electric (PV) modules are quite inexpensive today. They are installed with ‘plug-n-play’ type of wiring, on roof-mounted racks that can be installed by anyone with a knowledge of building. I don’t think that I would recommend that my clients try to build solar modules, but I would recommend purchasing them, with 20-25 year warranties.

This is a good blog posting – I do actually agree with a large percentage of your points but some of the more detailed issues I have reservations regarding but that might be me being pedantic.
A: I think that pretentious is spelled slightly differant, and most kids outgrow it before their teens. Don’t take tourself so seriously, it’s a crazy world we live in.
July 14th, 2010 at 1:58 pm
Where can it be, i would like to read more about this posting, thank you.
A: The operation was a success, but…
We’ve really been busy and haven’t had the manpower nor capital to continue on with the research. We have a very good beta product for a southern climate without an electric grid. We would like to develope the grid-tied product in the near future, but need to recieve a grant to help ease pain of the R&D.
